Do you need to get Peacock; the new NBC streaming service? The short answer is: If you want to watch the new 30 Rock, then, yes.
30 Rock, the long-beloved, super-award winning cult-classic NBC comedy starring Tina Fey, is coming back — sort of. Much like the early-pandemic days in which the cast of Parks and Recreation reunited to raise money for charities battling COVID-19 related hunger, the cast of 30 Rock will gather together again for the first time in many years — but not exactly for charity. The episode, which will be an hour-long special without commercial breaks, will air on Thursday, July 16, at 8 p.m., on NBC — meaning that you might just need to get another streaming service. Ugh!
But why is the iconic cast reuniting? Apparently, the 30 Rock cast will do it to showcase the offerings of the NBCUniversal 2020-2021 season. ‘Upfronts,’ as these are often called, are usually events that layout the upcoming schedule of television shows for the year, but this upfront will be quite different, and NBC described it as “a first-of-its-kind all-audience upfront event.” The 30 Rock cast will reunite for an all-new story that doubles as a way to promote the NBCUniversal programming coming up for the year. NBCUniversal, of course, covers USA, Bravo, E!, Oxygen, SYFY, CNBC, and Peacock, meaning that, if you like what 30 Rock promotes on the special, you might want to sign up for NBC Universal.
Tina Fey, Alec Baldwin, Tracy Jordan, Jane Krakowski, and Jack McBrayer will all reprise their roles for the special, as well as other cast members, to showcase the new slate of shows coming to the network. But more than that, the event will also be about “the future of programming… the future of our industry,” says Linda Yaccarino, a chairman in the advertising wing of NBCUniversal. She continued: “As the old saying goes when life hands you Lemon, have her host the Upfront!”
Hopefully, viewers will be able to see what changes Kenneth (Jack McBrayer) has made since becoming the head of the network in 30 Rock, and how Liz Lemon’s children are doing. Has Jenna Maroney aged well, or has she fought every inch of aging with Botox and an increasingly unhinged personality? Will Tracy Jordan still be up to his old antics, and will Jack Donaghy be a Trump supporter? Hopefully, we’ll be able to find out.
